It helps that Cantrell is a natural for Wells’ material. With a back-up band that can play ‘50s country in their sleep, Cantrell delivers songs closely associated with the country music queen. “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” may be Wells’ best known tune, an answer song to Hank Thompson’s “The Wild Side of Life,” but there are plenty more great selections including “Poison In Your Heart,” “I Don’t Claim to Be an Angel,” “I Gave My Wedding Dress Away” and Roy Acuff’s poignant and always relevant “Searching for a Soldier’s Grave.” Cantrell contributes one original, the divine “Kitty Wells Dresses.” As one of the music’s most honest performers, Cantrell loves her history, but has the talent to bring it up to date without losing the essence of what makes the music great.
