Details
[Edit]Though her resumé as a Birmingham Conservatoire graduate suggests that Laura Mvula would be strong on tradition, the twentysomething singer made her first impression on British audiences with an early EP's title track, "She," which was unlike the steady stream of Adele-like soul singers. It led the British paper The Guardian to call her music "gospeldelia" for its mix of gospel roots and psychedelic explorations. This eclecticism gives Mvula the freedom to wander between genres without getting labeled as a "gospel singer" or "R&B singer." This album's second single, "Green Garden," captures a rhythmic groove that comes and goes while an ensemble of voices wrap themselves like a garden vine around the keyboards and handclaps that form the elusive musical track. For a rainy-day ballad, "Can't Live With the World" envelopes Mvula in a smart, classic orchestration that brings back the days of Sinatra as well as early-'70s Philly soul.
