Between the Times & the Tides (Bonus Track Version)

Lee Ranaldo’s previous solo works feature a unique range of tones and textures. While fans of the Sonic Youth guitarist have appreciated his experimental efforts over the years, many have longed for a more accessible, rock ’n’ roll Ranaldo to emerge, and that’s what happens—brilliantly—on Between the Times and the Tides. From the first roiling guitar notes and the brooding charge of “Waiting on a Dream,” it’s evident that Ranaldo’s songwriting skill is on show here. “Off the Wall” has a friendly jangle, sounding like Sonic Youth at its poppiest, and “Xtina as I Knew Her” has the shadowy undertones of guitar unrest he’s known for. Clearly we’re in good hands, with a confident Ranaldo unpacking a whole bucket of goodies for us to sample. He serves up some chewy psych-rock and no shortage of acoustic moments that are surprisingly poetic and romantic. Between the Times is a beautiful and well-crafted record, one that his patient rockist fans should adore.
