Les Ambassadeurs began in Mali as a hotel band led by guitarist and singer Kante Manfila, but by the release of the group's debut LP in 1976, which featured vocalist Salif Keita on three cuts, Les Ambassadeurs had assimilated Cuban, Jamaican, and French influences into what would come to be known as Afro-pop. This wonderful collection gathers some of the group's early tracks, including the delightful "Djandjon," the reggae-driven "Bara Willile," and the 20-plus-minute "Kibaru," which occupied an entire side of their first LP.
