[Edit]Les Bantous were a splinter group of The Orch. Rock a Mambo, a very influential early band which could not really survive the defection of the musicians who went on to become Les Bantous. The founder of Les Bantous was Nino Malapet the clarinetist. Joining him were Essous the saxophonist, the singers Kosmos, Tchico and Pamelo Mounk'a, and guitarists Papa Noel and Master Mwana Congo — quite the all-star band. Ronnie Graham in his excellent book says about these early recordings: "Buy on sight!" The clarinet is just perfect for the early rumba sound and these guys have a more funky groove than any other early bands — even Franco, Kalle or Nico. Not that they are necessarily better, just groove harder (they even do a guaguanco number — "Maria Linda"). ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music, Rovi
