Details
[Edit]The Complete Decca Trios documents the beginning of Les Paul’s career, during which time he mastered several different styles including blues, country, and big band jazz. It all started in 1936, when the 21-year-old guitarist released several records (contained in the first six tracks of this collection) as an accompanist for blues singer Georgia White, a beautiful bellower in the mold of Bessie Smith. Then Paul recorded several hillbilly songs under the pseudonym Rhubarb Red and after that, he began developing his signature model guitar and turned to jazz, the music that was his true love. The recordings show the prolific Paul pairing up with a wide range of artists, from Quincy Jones to Helen Forrest to the Delta Rhythm Boys and the Andrews Sisters. Paul was ideal accompaniment for vocalists because his tone was so humanistic and lyrical. He shines on ballads, providing feats of finger movement that are as gentle as they are masterful. Immediately following the period documented on this collection Paul was in a car accident that would shatter his right arm and change the course of his career. However, these recordings form the training ground upon which he built his 1950s innovations.
