[Edit]Shleu-Shleu, the Haitian forerunner of what in NYC became Ska Shah #1, was one of the great bands. Their combination of swing and delicacy was one reason, but from this distance what stands out from that pre-funk era is their strong creole flavor, not just in the melodies but in the wonderful solo sax, a style no longer heard. Here's a question: given the Congo touch in the guitars, who was influencing whom? This reissue bears a 1990 copyright date, but it sounds like the '60s or very early '70s.
