As the son of Split Enz/Crowded House genius Neil Finn, Liam has serious shoes to fill. Lucky for him, he’s inherited his father’s easeful vocal style and his knack for writing catchy tunes. Liam has his own skills as well, crafting his own tunes within a variety of styles. This solo record, coming after stints with the supergroup Barb and fiddler Eliza Jane, is more tightly focused. A song like “Cold Feet” breaks into a bright chorus. “Neurotic World” drifts from an ambient fog into an ambitious melody that makes good use of Finn’s achingly pure voice. “The Struggle” punches up with a hard rock pound. “Real Late” lays back with a funky groove and keyboards that settle into the nightclub. “Little Words” sounds like it was recorded in the basement; its cramped sonics make for a powerful overheard quality. While “Chase the Seasons” is irresistible, as it trips out in its own personal psychedelia of keyboards and harmonies. A genuine treat.
