Liana Conway does things her way. After scoring a Taylor acoustic six-string, she pretty much taught herself how to play guitar from watching instructional videos on YouTube. And after two years of studying college-level business in Boston, she decided to change her life and pursue a summer internship at the Nashville Songwriters Association. After she met and collaborated with producer Phoenix Stone, Conway’s 2012 debut album, Sunrise, plays with the uplifting optimism of Colbie Caillat and the amorous musings of Taylor Swift. It opens with “Free,” a life-affirming hit-in-waiting that’s punctuated with lilting piano movements and the sort of nostalgic lyrics that you’d normally have to mine from a country song. With more rootsy instrumentation—like vintage electric guitar leads and a grinding Hammond B3 organ—the following “August Rush” does well to convey those slightly bittersweet feelings that come when you realize summer will soon be over. From its strolling rhythm to its catchy whistle solos and flirty lyrics, “Beautiful Day” perfectly reflects what a flawless day really feels like, making it an obvious choice for a single.
