This 22-year-old south Londoner has been wracking up accolades the world over for her tough soulful vocals. Two EPs -- one studio, one live -- set the scene for this convincing debut album, where La Havas proves she can turn on an emotion with switchblade action. The title track kicks into high gear, giving her husky, prickly voice a chance to push with great power. "Lost & Found" follows up with a tenderness that showcases the smoother range of her voice. Yet, underneath that gentleness she sings, "You broke me and taught me to truly hate myself." Martha's Vineyard singer-songwriter Willy Mason provides a gentlemanly counterpoint for the sophisticated acoustic duet, "No Room For Doubt." Producer Matt Hales, the British singer-songwriter who performs as Aqualung, co-wrote eight of the album's tracks with La Havas, who wrote all but the Scott Matthews cover "Elusive" on the official 12 track album. The Deluxe Edition adds a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye," with Chilly Gonzales on piano, and four additional live solo recordings.
