[Edit]

Blues singer Lightnin' Hopkins had two or three different Texas blues shuffle rhythms down pat, and he stretched bars or shrank them as he saw fit, fitting in lyrics that were part floating blue clichés and part personal ruminations and observations, and he often seemed to make them up on the spot as he did an endless round of recording studios for any label that would give him some cash to do it. He turned out countless albums this way, all pretty much like the other, yet different, with new titles and lyrics appearing over previously used blues rhythms. Lightnin' was Lightnin'. That's what you got, and that's what one gets here on this two-disc anthology, 38 Lightnin' Hopkins cuts like "Katie Mae," "Backwater Blues," and "Morning Blues." Not every one of them is a classic, but every one of them is classic Lightnin'.
