Details
[Edit]This 47-track collection isn't just a lovingly assembled document of a historic folk club's legacy; it traces the progress of the folk scene that grew up along with the venue. Nestled in a comely corner of Saratoga Springs in upstate New York, Lena Spencer's Caffe Lena has hosted America's finest folk artists since 1960. Even though this compilation picks up the story in 1967, it still encompasses a stunning array of performances up through 2013. Dave Van Ronk, Tom Paxton, and other '60s Greenwich Village folk icons share space with artists who emerged as part of the '80s "new folk" scene, like John Gorka ("Down in the Milltown"), Greg Brown ("Flat Stuff"), and Christine Lavin ("Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind"). By the time you get up to incisive 2013 performances by modern-day song-poets like Anais Mitchell ("Wedding Song") and Mary Gauthier ("I Drink"), it becomes clear that this aural account of the work started back in 1960 by Spencer and continued by volunteers after her passing is no museum piece but part of a living tradition.
