[Edit]It's hard to pinpoint which exact extreme metal subgenre Lord Mantis hold their allegiance to. Are they sludge metal? Death metal? Doom metal? The truth of the matter is that all three styles are rolled up into one sonic hodgepodge on their 2009 release, Spawning the Nephilim. Comprised of members that have strong ties to black metallists Avichi (singer/guitarist Andrew Markuszewski, guitarist Greg Gomer, bassist Charlie Fell, and drummer Bill Bumgardner), the "Lord Mantis sound" is best heard on such ditties as "Lord Mantis," as well as such curiously titled tunes as "Unnatural Dwarfism" and "Abducted by Aliens." Lord Mantis lays it on dark and thick throughout Spawning the Nephilim.
