Details
[Edit]This album by North Carolina band Lou Ford is full of ambitious, anthemic guitar pop with alternative country and folk-rock touches. The opener, "Storz' Bar," certainly sets the bar high, building steadily with Beatlesque flourishes and welling harmonies and then finally giving way to a rugged, Neil Young-like guitar solo. "A Mile Away," meanwhile, is unabashed, glorious power pop, once again featuring fine vocal harmonies à la Big Star or Matthew Sweet. And like those two artists, Lou Ford has an uncanny ear for melody. The band doesn't have an aversion to dirtied-up barroom rock either, as the supple, Stonesy "Replacement" proves. The North Carolina combo's pop smarts even shine through on more rootsy numbers, such as "What've I Gotta Do." This is a fine effort from top to bottom from a group with uncanny melodic chops.
