[Edit]Proving that smart and wiry power pop is still alive and well somewhere in the Midwest, Love Kit's debut album, 10 Milligram Day, combines witty and surreal lyrics with high-quality melodic hooks and a enjoyably caffeinated level of energy. Songwriters and vocalists Eddie Jemison and Rich Sparks tend to fare better with their more upbeat numbers such as "Is This Love" and "American Express," particularly when they get to crank up their amps and chop away at their guitars, but janglier numbers like "Fade Away" and "A.M." prove the band has plenty of charm (and sharp tunes) that still communicate when the tempos are turned down a bit. And while the production by Matt Allison doesn't always give the harder-rocking tunes the muscle they deserve, bassist Ellen Phillips and drummer Tim Ford are a lean but high-octane rhythm section who drive this band with a healthy dose of energy and enthusiasm. Great stuff from a wildly underappreciated band.
