Although this is the first release by Laura Pergolizzi (a.k.a. L.P.)—and it’s only an EP—the artist has made quite a mark already. She’s written songs for Rihanna, Heidi Montag, The Backstreet Boys, and Christina Aguilera. She’s had a song (the title track) featured prominently in a commercial for a major bank and performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live. These six songs are strong showcases for L.P.’s booming, dynamic voice. Two-thirds of the way through “Levitator,” she positively howls along with the soaring guitar leads, overtaking them. Her voice is so strong it almost overpowers more subdued songs like “Someday” and “Tokyo Sunrise,” but such mild histrionics appear to be her only vice. Besides, who can blame the artist for wanting to show off a little bit? Now that we know she can sing like a banshee and craft a good pop song, one hopes that an actual LP from L.P. is shortly forthcoming, so we can see how she stretches out into more of a long-form work.
