This amazing display of saxophone virtuosity finds Houtkamp recording a cappella on tenor saxophone on three tracks and alto saxophone on two tracks. Reaching deep into a remarkable bag of tricks, there is an astonishing array of advanced technique woven through each number. Using the entire range of his horns, with rapidly changing velocity, dynamics, and rhythm, while luxuriating in slap tongue, squawks, flutter tongue, and multiphonics, Houtkamp demonstrates an encyclopedic ability to manufacture every imaginable sound. That he does so in an accessible manner is a tribute to his skill. Regardless of how special this CD is; however, there is a solipsistic element that seeps in, and a feeling that the listener is eavesdropping on a private performance. But what a performance it is! Issued as a limited edition of 500 pressings, this CD is an extraordinary display of the capabilities of the alto and tenor saxophones.
