Houtkamp thrives in the duo setting, and these nine cuts each feature him with a different partner. The music is marked by unmitigated joy, as the saxophonist shows different sides of his personality on each piece. The opening "Randang Heat Wave," with George Lewis, races from the start, the two horns locking horns and never letting go. This is followed by a melancholy, airy feast with Gert-Jan Prins on timpani, the saxophonist exploring ethereal heights. Throughout, there are diverse moods explored, the timbres ever-changing. John Russell's atonal acoustic guitar is a good foil on "Bubble & Squeak," which does exactly that. Other collaborators include percussionist Martin Blume, electric guitarist Wiek Hijmans, bass clarinetist Lori Freedman, alto saxophonist Ned Rothenberg, and trombonist Günter Christmann, with one track featuring Houtkamp performing with an interactive computer program that he wrote himself. This is a collection of music that never lets up, but challenges and rocks the soul, with Houtkamp always in command.
