Alt-country superstar Lucinda Williams’ first album for her own label, Highway 20 Records, is a 20-song double album that rocks, shuffles, and sways for a remarkable 104 minutes, an epic by anyone’s count. Key here, Williams put together a no-nonsense band of pros, including coproducer and pedal steel man Greg Leisz, drummer Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), keyboardist Ian McLagan (Faces), and guitarists Bill Frisell and Tony Joe White, who make it easy for her to settle into grooves. She's mastered her vernacular; songs like “This Old Heartache,” “West Memphis,” and the 10-minute closer of J.J. Cale’s “Magnolia” never waste a second.
