Daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Suzzy Roche and half-sister of Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Lucy Wainwright Roche grew up with music all around her. Yet she was among the last to succumb to its charms and start a solo career. Her second album, There Is a Last Time for Everything, is a huge jump from her debut, Lucy. Recorded in Nashville with co-producer Jordan Brooke Hamlin, the album features a confident singer who captures a perfect, practical balance between folk and adult pop. The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy joins her for “Seek and Hide.” Mary Chapin Carpenter adds her voice to the quirky waltz “A Quiet Life.” But it’s Lucy’s show, and whether she’s toying with Robyn’s dance-pop hit “Call Your Girlfriend” and turning it into a desperate plea or laying it all on the line on the fatalistic “Last Time,” she’s the saddest, most convincing female singer since Golden Palominos veteran Lori Carson, whose Everything I Touch Runs Wild sounds like Lucy’s spiritual counterpart.
