Originally from Boston (where she attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music) and now based in Atlanta, Lyric Jones is new on the hip-hop scene. But she's already impressing heads with her lyrical dexterity and musical prowess: she can rap, sing, and play the drums. Jones St. LP is her first album, and it’s a strong one. Influenced by the likes of Jean Grae, MC Lyte, Bahamadia, and Stahhr, she rejects the usual female rap stereotypes (bedroom skills and brand-name dropping) in lieu of straight lyrics reflecting on her personal struggles and triumphs both inside and outside the music game. The production's outstanding: a soulful blend of choice samples and chunky drums, perfectly suited to her top-shelf verbalism. There's really not a weak song here, though "23rd St.," "Appetizer Menu," "Loss on Repeat" (with Esperanza Spalding), "Downtime" (featuring J-Live), and "Sha Dop" are especially fresh. Her singing skills are showcased on "Middle of the World" and "Tin Can," showing a vocal versatility that's hard to believe.
