Details
[Edit]A hip-hop legend who was gunned down in 2004, Mac Dre has attained near-mythical status in his native Bay Area, where he mentored countless artists, launched Thizz Entertainment, and by extension created the whole Hyphy movement. Since his passing, plenty of compilations and best-of collections have hit the scene. But this one was actually assembled by Khayree, the Vallejo producer who worked with Dre on his earliest projects: Young Black Brotha (his 1989 debut EP) and California Livin (two years later). Unsurprisingly, the tracks here sound a bit dated; they're rawer sonically than his later work, with a definite old-school sound to both the lyrics and beats. But middle-aged heads and hardcore Mac Dre fans will love it. It's loaded with heavy funk and slick wordplay; standout joints include "Too Hard for the F*ckin Radio," "Times R Getting Crazy," and "Da Gift 2 Gab."
