Brother and sister duo Judd & Maggie deliver sweetly emotional, delicately crafted pop on their debut album Subjects. Produced by Beck drummer Joey Waronker and his father, legendary producer Lenny Waronker, Subjects is a low-key, but ear-catching release with flourishes of folk, indie rock, and country that brings to mind nothing less than a canny mix of the Sundays and Fleetwood Mac. Primarily featuring Maggie's crystalline lead vocals, Judd also takes a few turns at the mic, showcasing his smooth, folky croon. Although the band itself is usually a duo, they expand the lineup here to include percussion by Joey Waronker as well as guitars, horns, and even a string section. The result is beautifully organic and only serves to frame the band's compelling songs.
