Matebis

This is the last album that the great Martiniquan pianist Paulo Rosine recorded with Malavoi prior to his death. His piano playing, particularly on Cuban riffs and ballads, was incomparable. This album is a masterpiece and a classic. The vocal of Tanya St. Val on "La Gwadeloupeen" is superb and a fitting tribute to the women of Guadeloupe. Edith Lefel's rendition of "La Sirene" is a hauntingly beautiful melody that floats above the Cuban-inspired rhythm-like liquid drops of amethyst. Ralph Thamar sings on his "Exil," a hit he had a number of years prior to this album. "Me Ki Sa Ou Le" is a standout track with monster bass, strings that sear and fine banjo work by Kali. Matebis, the self-titled Malavoi, which includes "La Filo," "Caresse Moin," "Amelia," and "Cinello," Live au Zenith and Jou Ouve are the ones to get to experience a group that is unique and unparalleled in the world of large string orchestras. Those unfamiliar with Malavoi's contribution to Caribbean music might equate strings with syrupy ballads. One listen to the bass-generated swing that comes from this orchestra will dispel any doubts. Highly recommended.
