Details
[Edit]Malente is a fixture on the European electro-funk club circuit, and in addition to producing albums of his own he has remixed for the likes of DJ Friction, the Strike Boys, le Hammond Inferno and Frank Popp Ensemble. Rip It Up features remixes of tracks from Malente's own albums, remixed by artists with whom he has worked in the past; it also includes three previously unreleased Malente tracks in unremixed form. Everything here is lots of good, quirky, funk fun, but Malente shines especially bright on the new "Dancefloor Whore"; on Dublex, Inc.'s thick and heavy remix of "Funk the Rich"; on the Strike Boys' gloriously retro take of "Highlife," and on the Killergroove Formula's mindlessly brilliant mix of "We Came to Party." If you're looking for thoughtful complexity or sly allusions, then Malente's house is not the place for you — you'll want to go down the street to Spring Heeled Jack's, or maybe upstairs where DJ Spooky is alphabetizing his book collection. Chez Malente — it's all about big, stupid beats and new ways of slicing and dicing them. Highly recommended.
