Details
[Edit]Though one of the first Mexican-American rock acts, Mando and gang's importance is sociological rather than musical. Their sole album is fair but generic period R&B/rock, Mando belting out the words with the good-natured bellow of a seasoned bar/lounge entertainer. They seemed determine to prove their versatility, although they don't excel at anything in particular, with covers zooming from "San Antonio Rose" and Ernest Tubb's "I'm Walkin' the Floor Over You" to "Harbour Lights" and the R&B ballad "Cherry Pie"; on uptempo jump blues-influenced numbers like "Swingin' Baby," they even sound a bit like Louis Prima. Ace's CD reissue adds four bonus cuts from 1957-58 non-LP singles. There's also a 1955 single by Armando Almendarez (aka Mando) in the conjunto style, including a zesty accordion-laced cover of "Maybellene" that's more unusual (and hence more interesting) than anything cut by the group.
