After leading Catfish Walk and other Boston area bands under his birth name, Marc Barnicle, guesting in the studio with blues harpist James Montgomery, and backing folk/punk diva Mary Lou Lord on the road, this young guitar slinger/sideman took center stage with this strong solo debut. Backed by a core unit of Dave Hull from Pete Droge's band on bass and Vandals/Perfect Circle alumnus Josh Freese on drums, Copely plays and sings with exceptional intensity. The material, co-written with producer and former RCA artist David Werner, reflects a strong creativity at fine levels of detail within the pop framework. His altered chord on the third bar of the chorus in "Truth and Oil," for example, points the melody and the rest of the progression toward unexpected and refreshing directions. Copely doesn't shy away from playing his guitar; throughout the album he solos frequently, never overwhelming the song but always fitting into its framework and building momentum back to the vocal entrance. The blue-collar spin of the lyrics and undeniable energy of his delivery throughout Limited Lifetime Guarantee was enough to position Copely as a working-class hero of stadium-sized potential. ~ Robert L.
