On first glance, this record should not be any good. Originally put out as an LP by the cheap Design label and reissued by Simitar as a CD in 1998, it features cornetist Jimmy McPartland and a septet including his wife, pianist Marian McPartland, performing jazz versions of eight television theme songs from the late 1950s; the CD adds a "new" alternate take of "Peter Gunn." However, the septet (which also includes trombonist Urbie Green, Dick Cary on alto horn, Andy Fitzgerald on his cool-toned clarinet and flute, bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Mousey Alexander) is excellent; the arrangements (probably by Marian McPartland) are inventive, and the music is turned into swinging and exuberant jazz. Certainly these are the best recorded versions of "Thanks for Dropping By" (the theme for The Garry Moore Show), "Mystery March" (from The Alfred Hitchcock Show) and "I-M-4-U" (the Jack Paar theme). Overall, this is a happy surprise which is easily recommended to Dixieland and trad jazz fans.
