[Edit]This excellent set of modern jazz features originals from vibraphonist Mark Sherman and pianist Allen Farnham plus "Moon River" and "My One and Only Love." Most of the selections utilize a vibes-trumpet-piano frontline and the music is modern mainstream jazz, swinging but more advanced than hard bop. Tenor great Joe Lovano guests on three numbers and as usual makes a strong impact. Sherman is a fluent vibraphonist whose solos and ensemble work are particularly attractive. This is also an excellent showcase for the soloing of trumpeter Joe Magnarelli and pianist Allen Farnham, with bassist Dean Johnson and drummer Tim Horner keeping the momentum flowing. So overall, One Step Closer is an excellent example of modern swinging jazz circa 2005.
