This budget package collects up 14 of the grande dame's best known sides, supposedly all recorded between 1933 and 1939, although the version of "Falling in Love Again" sounds suspiciously like the later 1940s recut she made for Decca. All of it is pulled off of old 78s, and the transfers are a bit distorted, with seemingly no kind of audio cleanup applied. Still, Marlene sounds sultry and spirited on tracks like "Ich Bin Die Fesche Lola," "Johnny," "Nimm Dich In Acht Vor Blonden Frauen," and English-sung tracks like "Near You" and "You Go to My Head." If you can get past the shoddy packaging and sometimes crummy sound, there's a small fortune of great performances aboard.
