[Edit]Trumpeter Marlon Jordan's first recording as a leader in four years finds the 26-year-old still a bit derivative of Wynton Marsalis, but a stronger player overall than he was on his earlier Columbia dates. Jordan's range has expanded; he takes chances in his frequently exciting solos and his tone is appealing. Actually, his sidemen (most notably clarinetist Alvin Batiste, who is in top form, and Victor Goines on tenor and soprano) sometimes take solo honors during the colorful post-bop date. The repertoire consists of three John Coltrane tunes, two by Miles Davis, "Ballad for Trane" from saxophonist Kidd Jordan (Marlon's father), and "Caravan." Fine music, even though Marlon Jordan has yet to develop into an innovative player.
