[Edit]Acknowledging he’s now a permanent cult artist, Marshall Crenshaw took to Kickstarter to sell directly to his fans; every few months he's been offering up a new 10-inch EP containing a new track, a cover, and a rerecording of an old favorite. Digitally, a live performance from the archives is added as a bonus. The first of these EPs, I Don’t See You Laughing Now, features the title track—which sounds exactly like what a Marshall Crenshaw fan would expect from the old master. It’s a '60s/'80s-style power pop tune that could’ve appeared on Crenshaw's debut album, except for the stronger production and an electric guitar tone and solo that reflects his growth as a musician and an engineer. (At five-plus minutes, it’s an epic!) A cover of The Move’s “No Time” is an unexpected but welcomed turn, shifting toward acoustic guitars and flutes. The rerecording is an unusual performance of “There She Goes Again” with The Bottle Rockets. A 1987 live version of “Maryanne” finishes out the EP.
