A prolific bassist, performing with the Johnson Mountain Boys, Longview, and many others, Marshall Wilborn made his solo debut in 1999 with Root 5: Bass and Banjo. Wilborn is quite skilled on both instruments, having started with banjo as a youth, and switched to bass when many of this friends were playing banjo, and a bassist was more needed. "Owensboro Hop" and "Lady of Spain" are bright with his superb banjo performances, as are many others of this all instrumental album. The bass comes through on "Holland Holiday," "Little Rock Getaway," and more. Recommended for traditional bluegrass fans, and those who have heard Wilborn's performances with his wife Lynn Morris will definitely want his solo work as well.
