[Edit]
The third installment of Marshmello’s explosive Joytime series is by far his most adventurous and collaborative. Following a period of intense crossover for the masked DJ/producer that turned up hits with Logic, Bastille, Anne-Marie, and CHVRCHES, III harnesses that spirit and applies it to his EDM roots. The songs are still unmistakably Mello—adhering to his signature recipe of squealing video-game synths (“Here We Go Again”), lurching bass acrobatics (“Earthquake” feat. TYNAN), and wistful, trance-y melodies (“Room to Fall” feat. Flux Pavilion and Elohim)—but thanks to an unusually long list of featured artists, there are far more twists and turns. Hear him explore unexpected negative space with Yultron (“Let’s Get Down”) and put a zippy, rave-y spin on brooding guitar-rock with A Day to Remember (“Rescue Me”).
