The Focus: O Essencial De series produces good compilations with around 20 tracks focusing on a good breadth of the artist's career. This one is dedicated to Martinho da Vila, a true sambista of the hills who divulged the rootsy samba grooves among the broader society. Comprises the period 1968/1998, including "Casa de Bamba," with which he participated in the IV FMPB in 1968. Megahits like "Segure Tudo" and "Canta, Canta Minha Gente," which established da Vila as an album-selling artist, weren't included because they were recorded for RCA. But "Disritmia," one of those super successes of that phase, is present. The documentation of the early phases is important to observe da Vila's development of his highly personal vocal style, more and more malandro, malemolente (full of a typical sambista smartness) through the years. The compilation includes big hits like "Mulheres" that are minor commercial works of restricted melodic/lyrical interest.
