Details
[Edit]Mary Lambert was a bartender when Macklemore asked the spoken-word artist to write a hook for "Same Love," and, well, she's not a bartender anymore. Like that impassioned call for tolerance, Lambert's debut is personal, honest, and memorable. On "Secrets," she unfurls a list of foibles over a bouncing beat that explodes in a joyful chorus. Tracks like "Heart on my Sleeve" and "Chasing the Moon" are melodic adult contemporary pop, while "When You Sleep" and "Wounded Animal" are intimate affairs, just Lambert singing over melancholy piano chords. And yes, that's a mournful cover of Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl," exemplifying Lambert's talent for expressing the bittersweet.
