[Edit]A legendary singer and one of Motown's first breakthrough stars, Mary Wells was beloved around the world, influenced an entire generation of musicians, scored numerous huge hits, and died tragically from cancer at the age of 49. Best known for her 1964 smash "My Guy," she released 16 albums over a 30-year career, with more than 25 charting singles. She worked with Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye and also toured with The Beatles, who cited her as their favorite American singer. There's no shortage of Wells compilation albums, and all of them have their merits. Yet this collection is especially good in that it includes the oft-forgotten latter part of her lengthy discography. Starting with a great cover of Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You," this showcases several tracks off her 1984 album I'm a Lady: The Old, the New, and the Best of Mary Wells, most notably the sound effects–laden "Money Talks," an updated, clap-happy version of "My Guy," and an awesome horn-infused version of "Two Lovers." If you have a soft spot for '80s R&B (and who doesn't?) performed by a true musical icon, this is a real gem.
