Released in 1978, Mass Production's third album Three Miles High falls short of the excellence of the band's two previous efforts. This LP marked the first time that a Mass Production album was uneven and inconsistent. Not that Three Miles High is terrible by any means. "Scary Love," "Groove Me," and "Sky High" are competent, if unremarkable, funk-disco items, and "I Don't Want to Know" is a pleasant soul ballad. But if you played Three Miles High right after 1976's Welcome to Our World or 1977's Believe, you would have to say that Mass Production isn't as focused or as inspired on this album. In 1978, Three Miles High might have led listeners to believe that perhaps the band was starting to run out of gas, but that wasn't the case as the following year Mass Production enjoyed its biggest hit with "Firecracker." Not a disaster but definitely not essential, Three Miles High is strictly for collectors.
