The debut full-length by Masters at Work begins with several tracks of mid-tempo ragga hip-hop ("Give It to Me" with Screechie Dan, "The Buddah Chant") and ends with a few tracks of premiere vocal house — "Can't Stop the Rhythm" (with Jocelyn Brown) and "I Can't Get No Sleep" (with India). Although it'd be easy to say that the beathead Gonzalez and the more house-minded Vega each masterminded one side of the album separately, it's more of a collaborative effort than it appears. The link point comes with several short breakbeat sample tracks, like the highlight "Get Up" (though it's just over two minutes) and "Blood Vibes." Though it's not as convincing as many of MAW's singles, The Album is a solid summation of what made Masters at Work the best American house unit during the 1980s and '90s.
