Pianist Mathias Landaeus' quintet is at times a little reminiscent of the group that Keith Jarrett had with tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman in the 1970s. Karl-Martin Almqvist sometimes sounds a little like Redman, and his free bop improvising is influenced by Ornette Coleman. However the Jarrett/Redman inside/outside style is only a reference point since both Landaeus and Almqvist are also original players with their own complementary approaches. The pianist contributed all six selections on House of Approximation, including the joyful "Let Us Play," the tender yet inwardly passionate ballad "Visa Om en Ensam Flicka," and a selection ("Gamla Filmstaden") that is both danceable and quite free. Almqvist has many fine solos and is particularly passionate on "Fluffy" while bassist Filip Augustson, drummer Sebastian Voegler, and percussionist Ola Bothzén are both stimulating and tasteful in support of the lead voices. Recommended.
