Mathilda Jones is a powerful blues and soul singer whose voice ranges from a whisper to the intensity of Janis Joplin. She is best known in New Orleans, where she recorded this CD, her second as a leader. Backed by a fine rhythm section that includes heated solos by guitarist John Fohl, Jones sounds spirited if a bit predictable throughout a set of colorful material including "Everybody Needs Some Lovin," "Rain Keeps Falling" (recorded more than a year before Hurricane Katrina), "Bright Lights, Big City," and "Night Time Is the Right Time."
