This Trip LP features Maynard Ferguson's last Emarcy recordings as a freelance Hollywood-based studio musician, just prior to him forming the Birdland Dream Band. The high-note trumpeter is heard leading a 12-piece band filled with West Coast players, including tenor saxophonist Bill Holman, who provided all dozen songs plus the arrangements. Ferguson gets to show off his versatility (including playing some credible blues) and takes a spot-on bass trumpet on "Mrs. Pitlack Regrets." Among the other key soloists on these concise selections are altoist Herb Geller, Georgie Auld on tenor, and trombonist Bobby Burgess. This is a fine outing that is long-overdue to be reissued on CD.
