Although this release looks like a single CD from the outside, only listing the first dozen songs, What We Do is actually a double-CD. The power rock trio of guitarist Scott McGill, electric bassist Michael Manring, and drummer Vic Stevens fill the first disc with their interpretations of a dozen jazz classics. However they often tear apart the pieces, playing high-powered rock and treating the songs as heavy metal or fusion jams. Sometimes they are respectful to the melodies, and at other times not. Their musicianship is impressive and they generally keeps the results interesting. The second disc contains group originals, and McGill Manring Stevens play in a similar style as on the first disc, but without the strong themes. This intriguing two-fer is more highly recommended to fans of rock and heavy metal guitarists than to jazz listeners.
