By the end of the '90s, the melodic wall of noise pioneered by bands like the Jesus and Mary Chain and then refined and sweetened by My Bloody Valentine had all but disappeared from the world of indie pop. Places You Call Home is a welcome return to the form. It's less hazy than MBV but more polished and listenable that the Chain at their Psychocandy-est. It's still rough around the edges in some places, though, the sound of a band taking tentative steps into a lush but loud pop sound that they would further refine on the follow-up, Starsandsons.
