The Leeds, England–based duo of Ryan Needham and Liza Violet often invite “auxiliary” members to flesh out their sound. Menace Beach's resulting debut album, Ratworld, could be 2015’s best ‘90s-influenced release. Just as the ’80s saw a ‘60s garage-rock-psychedelia revival, so go Menace Beech, reminding us what we loved most about '90s groups like Slowdive, Helium, Melting Hopefuls, and many indie bands that disbanded upon encroaching parenthood. Violet’s “Blue Eye” soothes while songs such as “Elastic,” “Dig It Up,” and “Infinite Donut” provide a sugar rush of infectious pop melodies. “Tennis Court” might have you wondering if Menace Beach hope to open for The Breeders.
