[Edit]The Best of Mercyful Fate looks at the band’s seminal early years from 1982 to 1984. During this time, they released the Mercyful Fate EP, the Melissa album, and the classic Don’t Break the Oath, all of which came out on the esteemed underground metal label Roadrunner. While the band continued to record classic songs well into the '90s, they never sounded as raw as they are here. You can hear pieces of Motörhead colliding with Rush and Judas Priest, while songs like “Return of the Vampire” betray a kinship to punk bands like The Misfits and The Ramones. Still, no one would ever mistake the young Mercyful Fate for another group. They were one of the era's most original metal acts, thanks in large part to singer King Diamond, who was the first frontman to wear corpse paint and who sang in a capricious falsetto that could sound magnificent and unhinged, often in the same moment. “A Corpse Without a Soul,” “Evil,” and “Into the Coven” remain some of black metal’s most enticingly catchy songs, but don’t overlook the band’s more challenging tracks. The 11-minute “Satan’s Fall” is a harrowing masterwork.
