[Edit]Merry Clayton's landmark vocal performance on The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter"—where she chillingly sings "Rape, murder/It's just a shot away"—is her most famous moment. Yet she was a longtime backup vocalist for Elvis Presley, The Supremes, and Joe Cocker, as well as a member of Ray Charles' Raelettes in the early '60s. After "Gimme Shelter," Clayton released a solo album of the same name, from which several of the tracks of this fine "Best Of" are taken. Most songs here are from the two solo records she recorded for Ode Records in 1970 and 1971, along with a few later cuts (including "Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow" from her 1975 gospel album of the same name). "After All This Time" was a minor hit. Yet much of her material is idiosyncratic gospel-soul, usually of other famous people's hits: from Neil Young's "Southern Man" (here given great definition and meaning) to Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds."
