[Edit]While the heavy guitar melodicism which distinguished Mark Baldwin's tenure with Lovecup remains intact on Mezzanines' self-titled debut, his music is now immersed in dank lo-fi atmospherics and a thickly psychedelic haze — from the Beatlesque aspirations of "Grip Is Loose" to the glam-influenced "Talking to a Plant," the album's grasp of mood and texture is impressive, exploiting the tension between cosmic ambitions and four-track limitations to good effect.
