Contrary to Michael Krassner's pedigree as the founder of the improvisational Chicago underground unit Boxhead Ensemble, his self-titled debut is a straightforward and gorgeously understated collection of piano ballads steeped in the formal traditions of '70s pop. Though not the most technically proficient singer, Krassner's wavering vocals lend added poignance to his sweetly melancholy songs, from the Lennonesque "You're Such a Fool" to the waltz-like "To Lose Is to Gain"; exquisitely atmospheric and frequently affecting, it's a fine debut.
