Lovely Gold was recorded in 1977 on a four-channel tube-driven recording device that Michael Yonkers built by combining various parts of other machines. Then the album collected dust on a shelf until Drag City released it in 2010. The minute-and-a-half-long “My Love” opens with a Doors-esque boogie before dissolving into proto-indie mayhem where Yonkers sings with shaky vocals. Then the eerily waltzing “I Knew You’d Remember” plays like lo-fi Appalachian post-folk. “Don’t Wait Until Tomorrow” gets weird, with baritone backing vocals accompanying Yonkers singing like a dive bar’s old lounge crooner over more surf-oriented guitars. “Will It Be” has more serious musing, as Yonkers muses wistfully over an English-flavored folky dirge of beautiful melancholy. With haunting harmonies, amazing fuzz-guitar leads, and a riff that resembles the theme song for the '60s Batman TV series, it’s easy to understand why Yonkers chose “Lovely Gold” for the title track.
